Konta displays growth mindset

Melbourne - Although British star Johanna Konta was beaten in straight sets - 6-4, 6-2 - by Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur, she was upbeat after her first round loss at the Australian Open in Melbourne on Tuesday.

Konta has been out with a knee injury for four and half months before her recent return to competition in the Brisbane International (where she also lost in the opening round).

Post-match at the year's first Grand Slam, the 28-year-old was delighted by how much stronger her knee felt.

“So, yeah, definitely that’s a big positive and something that I’m very pleased about moving forward.”

Konta bristled when asked whether she was going to leave Australia feeling good about herself after her first round loss in Australia.

“Should I feel bad about myself for not winning a match?”

Konta then opened up as to why she plays the sport.

“I play the sport because I love to compete and I love to win. I work towards lifting trophies. That’s why I play.”

By this stage Konta was now in a reflective mood and revealed her growth mindset.

“However, what fulfils me from this sport is to feel how it feels to learn, how it feels to grow.”

Konta is obviously committed to both her sport and her personal growth.

Good luck Johanna with both of these quests in 2020.
