Melbourne - South Africa's Kevin Anderson has advanced to the second round of the Australian Open after beating Diego Schwartzman of Argentina in their first round encounter on Monday.
The 14th seed won in four tight sets, 7-6 (7/5), 7-5, 5-7, 6-4.
Anderson will now play Ricardas Berankis of Lithuania in the second round on Wednesday after the latter defeated Igor Sijsling of the Netherlands 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7/2), 6-7 (6/8), 6-4.
Meanwhile, South Africa's top women's player, Chanelle Scheepers, was ousted in her first round match, going down 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 to Anna Schmiedlova of Slovakia.
