Thiem: Unrealistic to expect the US Open to escape coronavirus

Dominic Thiem admitted he would be surprised if the US Open were allowed to go ahead without any delays due to the coronavirus.

He has responded excitedly at the news that he will be able to resume his practice routine, but admits that he is still in limbo until more information is known about when the ATP Tour will resume after the coronavirus lockdown.

Austrian Sports Minister Werner Kogler has given permission for Thiem to get back out on the training courts while governments across the world continue to take measures to contain the spread of coronavirus.

However, as happy as Thiem is about that, he doesn't believe it helps him in any substantial way until there are more concrete plans about when tournament play starts up again.

"This is incredible news. I can't wait to get back on the court," Thiem told Sky Sports Austria.

"[But] it will be a long time before the Tour starts again.

"Let's say it takes another three or four months – No one can endure training for that long.

"We have all played so much tennis in our careers that a month of preparation will be enough to get in shape."

Thiem also believes the US Open will also fall victim to the pandemic, describing hopes of getting the Tour restarted in time for the American swing as 'unrealistic'.

"I will be happy if the Tour starts again at all," he added.

"I don't care on what surface it will be. The swing in America is very unrealistic.

"I miss tennis, I'm happy that I can work out again, [but] I won't start a full training session until there is a realistic schedule."
