Sock, Cilic to open USA v Croatia tie

Los Angeles - American Jack Sock will face a tough opening clash against former US Open champion Marin Cilic of Croatia in the opening match of their Davis Cup World Group quarter-final tie in Portland on Friday.

The draw made on Thursday pits 26th-ranked Sock against world No 12 Cilic and 16th-ranked John Isner against 54th-ranked Borna Coric in the opening singles.

On Saturday, America's mighty doubles duo of Bob and Mike Bryan will take on Ivan Dodig and Marin Draganja, with Isner facing Cilic and Sock taking on Coric in the reverse singles on Sunday.

Play is set to begin on the hardcourts of the Tualatin Hills Tennis Center at noon on Friday (19:00 GMT - 21:00 SAST).

Cilic, the 2014 US Open winner, needs to bounce back from a five-set defeat to Roger Federer in the Wimbledon quarter-finals if he is to help Croatia build on their first-round win over 2015 finalists Belgium.

While the United States are the most successful Davis Cup nation ever, with 32 titles, Croatia have won all three of their prior clashes with the US.

Cilic starred in their most recent encounter, a World Group quarter-final in 2009.

The Americans are hoping home court advantage will help them this time as they seek to reverse their recent fortunes in the tournament.

They were ousted in the first round the past two years by Great Britain, but secured an impressive away win in Australia to reach the quarters this year.

The winners of the tie will face either the Czech Republic or France in the semi-finals.
