SA tennis prospect nominated for top award

Pretoria - Tennis South Africa (TSA) has hailed its rising young star, Lloyd Harris, after the youngster was nominated in the Newcomer of the Year category at the 2017 SA Sport Awards.

The awards, to be held at Emperors Palace in Johannesburg on November 12, see Harris as a finalist alongside Keshav Maharaj (SA cricket) and Sokwakhana Zazini (SA athletics).

The 20-year-old, from Cape Town, has enjoyed an impressive 2017, after recently reaching a career high ATP ranking of 199.

Harris was also one of just fourteen players from across the world selected to receive the first ever International Player Grand Slam Grants - awarded by the International Tennis Federation, earlier this year.

In addition, Harris, who made his Davis Cup debut for South Africa in 2016, and has since represented the country in five ties - winning eight out of 10 matches, was unbeaten in the international team tennis competition this year, as South Africa won promotion to Europe/Africa Group One.

Tennis South Africa CEO, Richard Glover, lauded Harris for his progress and dedication: “Lloyd is a rising star of both SA and world tennis and we are very proud of his achievements. This recognition is testimony to both his talent and hard work, as well as the sacrifices that he, his family and his support team have made. On behalf of both tennis players and fans across South Africa, we wish to congratulate him on his nomination.”

Harris added: “I am honoured and delighted to have received the news, here in Japan, which is the cherry on top of what has been a most successful year for me.”
