Former Wimbledon champion: Tsitsipas is exactly what tennis needs

Cape Town - According to former Wimbledon champion Richard Krajicek, ATP champion Stefanos Tsitsipas is "exactly what tennis needs."

Tsitsipas won the ATP Finals last month to cement his status as a rising star of men's tennis, but he has also grown a reputation for himself away from the court.

That, according to Krajicek, is crucial as the sport searches for the next generation of stars to fill the void left by Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic in the coming years.

"It is a beautiful time in tennis. A new generation is knocking on the door," he said.

"You can see that at the ATP Finals in London, where no less than half of the field is 23 years or younger.

"The youngest of them all, Stefanos Tsitsipas, is the most charismatic player. Not only at the court, but also on the social media.

"He knows how to attract many fans. Exactly what tennis needs."

Tsitsipas has committed to playing Rotterdam in February, the tournament for which Krajicek is the director.

Gael Monfils, David Goffin, Denis Shapovalov, and Stan Wawrinka are also involved, but Krajicek is especially pleased to sign up Grigor Dimitrov.

"Grigor Dimitrov and the tournament have a special relationship," Krajicek added.

"He made his debut in 2009. It was one of the first chances to prove himself at ATP level as a top talent with us.

"He is eager to win the title, especially after reaching the final in 2018. He is one of the most favourite players in Rotterdam, so it is great that he will be there again."
