FFT claims Nadal supported French Open move

French Tennis Federation (FFT) president Bernard Giudicelli says they spoke to Rafael Nadal ahead of their decision to move the French Open.

Tennis was thrown into turmoil on Tuesday when Roland Garros officials announced that the French Open would be moved to 20 September.

The rest of the tennis world did not take kindly to the news, with the US Tennis Association, Laver Cup and Acapulco Open all expressing their dismay.

To add to the drama, the ATP and WTA issued a joint statement on Wednesday to confirm that there will be no tennis until 7 June at the earliest, which means the entire clay-court season has been wiped.

Well, with the exception of the French Open in September and FFT chief Giudicelli claims Roland Garros tournament director Guy Forget was in touch with 12-time champion Nadal before they made their announcement.

"We had Rafa on the phone (and) we tried to reach other players," he is quoted as saying by RMC Sport.

"It was Guy who got Rafa. His feeling was that it was a good decision that keeps the clay season on the calendar."
