Federer targets 21st Grand Slam title

Cape Town - Swiss superstar Roger Federer believes he still has the ability to win a 21st Grand Slam crown and reach the milestone of 100 career titles.

The 37-year-old leads the all-time list with 20 slams, winning the last one in January at the Australian Open. He followed that up by skipping the French Open, reaching the Wimbledon quarter-finals and the fourth round at the US Open.

The closest player to Federer in the slam count is Spain's Rafael Nadal with 17 while third on 14 is Serbian Novak Djokovic and American Pete Sampras.

In an interview with Chinese television network CGTN, Federer said he was still playing on the tour as he believes he able to win more tournaments.

His last tournament victory was the Stuttgart Open in June and was a losing finalist at the 2018 Halle Open and Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati.

"If I am still on tour, it is because I believe I can still win tournaments, still beat the best and I'm showing that," Federer said. "I think Australian Open, Wimbledon and US Open definitely will give me an opportunity to maybe chase my 21st slam.

"(But) I'm also ok if it doesn't happen. Although, don't get me wrong, the last few years have been an absolute dream run for me winning three.

"I'm on 98 titles now, I would love to get to 100. It is something I've said publicly already but if it doesn't happen, it doesn't happen.

"But the feeling is there that I could do it. As long as I enjoy myself, my family is fine and my wife is enjoying herself still on tour, I'll keep playing.

"Of course the body also has to be there for me but life on the tour is good and I'm looking forward to what is to come."
