Pospisil into Washington semis

Washington - Canada's Vasek Pospisil advanced to the semi-finals of the ATP and WTA Washington Open by defeating Colombia's Santiago Giraldo on Saturday in a rain-interrupted match.

Pospisil, who teamed with American Jack Sock to win the Wimbledon men's doubles crown, took a 6-7 (4/7), 6-3, 6-4 triumph to book a last-four date Saturday night with French sixth seed Richard Gasquet.

Canadian second seed Milos Raonic, coming off his first Grand Slam semi-final appearance at Wimbledon, will face American Donald Young in the other semi-final.

Pospisil won the first two points of the second set on his serve when rain stopped play Friday night. He ended up taking the only break of the final set in the last game.

"The rain really didn't help me. I was in a really good groove," Pospisil said.

"I took the confidence I had from the second set into the third, was swinging freely."

After only 10 hours away from the courts overnight, 36th-ranked Pospisil faced at least a five-hour wait before facing 14th-ranked Gasquet.

"I'll recover as quickly as I can," Pospisil said. "It's definitely a bit of a speed bump for me."

It's the first time he has faced such a twice-in-one-day situation and he hopes it can work to his advantage.

"Maybe my rhythm will be better," he said. "Maybe I'll be feeling the ball better."
