He was hoping to bounce back at this week's Eastbourne International event in England, where he was seeded fifth, as final preparation for the third Grand Slam of the season.

South Africa's top-ranked women's player, Chanelle Scheepers, remained in 68th position in the latest WTA ratings.

Novak Djokovic of Serbia maintained first place in the men's tennis rankings issued Monday by the ATP, ahead of weekend tournament winners Andy Murray and Roger Federer.

Djokovic has 11,830 points. The Briton Murray, who won Queen's on Sunday, has 8,560, and Halle champion Federer of Switzerland 7,740 points as there were no changes in the top 10.

The freshly crowned French Open champion Williams has 13,615 points, second-placed Belarussian Victoria Azarenka 9,625 and number three Maria Sharapova of Russia 9,415 points.
