The 30-year-old might not be available for selection in both the Fifa World Cup qualifying matches against African giants Senegal on 10 and 14 November.
However, he’s still included in the 25-man squad chosen by Bafana Bafana coach Stuart Baxter. If he’s not available, these goalies could stand in:
Ronwen Williams (25)
Club: SuperSport United since 2010
Williams has been one of the most consistent goalkeepers in the Premier Soccer League since his breakthrough season with SuperSport United in 2010. He’s also helped his side win the MTN8 final this season against Cape Town City. He also led his team to the double-legged Caf Confederations Cup final against TP Mazembe. His experience in African competitions will be needed to defeat the Lions of Teranga aka Senegal.
Wayne Sandilands (34)
Club: Orlando Pirates
Started: SuperSport United in 2004
Sandilands is one of the most experienced players in the Premier Soccer League. He has won many titles, including the Caf Champions League and Caf Super Cup with Mamelodi Sundowns. He might be the man to fill in the void left by Khune, thanks to his experience from African competitions.
Brilliant Khuzwayo (27)
Club: Kaizer Chiefs
Started: Amazulu 2010
The Durban-born goalie has seen limited game time this season due to Khune’s presence at the Naturena-based outfit. Khuzwayo is a very good goalkeeper and he’s always available for selection when needed to fill in big shoes. He’s made several appearances for Bafana Bafana and he might be one of the few goalies to be called to replace Khune at club level.
Darren Keet (28)
Club: Bidvest Wits
Started: Vasco Da Gama 2007
Keet is currently the preferred goalkeeper between him and Moeneeb Josephs in the Braamfontein-based outfit Bidvest Wits. He has experience and knows the culture of the national team. He’s also made several appearances for Bafana and that might work to his advantage to fill in for Khune.
