Cape Town - In his first press conference since leaving English shores, Wayne Rooney dismissed suggestions that he would be "gutted" to see England win the Soccer World Cup having not been a part of the squad.
Rooney is the current England record goalscorer (53) which he previously captained before retiring from international football.
During his unveiling as a DC United player in the US, a journalist asked the 32-year-old: "How does it feel to watch England in the World Cup as a spectator rather than a player, would you be a bit gutted if they win?"
To which Rooney responded, "No, I'll be delighted if we win (World Cup).
"I think that question is unfair, to be honest, you asking me if I'll be gutted if England win the World Cup," he continued.
"I'm from England. I'm an England fan and I want England to win. I don't think your question is a good one."
Rooney, who returned to Everton ahead of the 2017/18 season after a trophy-laden spell at Manchester United, suggested that he was happy to have joined DC United.
"I was grateful and delighted to go back [to Everton] last summer. But I've made the decision to come here," he said.
However, the versatile forward hinted that he didn't leave Everton on his own terms.
"I'm sure there's a lot of questions about why I left Everton and I'm sure the people who want to know can ask Everton and let them answer it," he said.
Rooney made 31 appearances for Everton in the 2017/18 Premier League, four of which came off the bench, scoring a creditable 10 goals.
