PICS: England, fans euphoric after shootout triumph

Cape Town - England made history on Tuesday night by winning their first ever penalty shootout at a World Cup, progressing to the quarter-finals of Russia 2018 in the process.

It was far from plain sailing, though, and when Jordan Henderson missed his kick from the spot English fans would have had a strong sense of deja vu as Colombia took the upper hand.

This time, however, the football gods were smiling down on the 'Three Lions' and when Eric Dier slotted home the winning penalty, the English team and their fans erupted.

The images that followed perfectly illustrated the party atmosphere that engulfed the English in Moscow, thanks to our photographer friends over at Getty Images.

Gareth Southgate's men will now take on Sweden in the quarter-finals.

Here are some of the best celebration pics of the night:

The moments following the penalty shootout...

The fans were fired up...

The skipper couldn't contain himself...

Goalkeeper Jordan Pickford was swamped by his team-mates...

Once it all calmed down, the players went to meet the fans...

A moment the English will never forget ...
