Cape Town - England centre-back Harry Maguire is relishing the chance to represent his country at the Soccer World Cup and says it's the pinnacle of anyone's career.
The 25-year-old has enjoyed an impressive first season at Leicester City, after signing from Hull City in July last year. He played every minute of the Foxes' Premier League campaign and received their player of the year and players’ player of the year awards.
His performances were well-received by Three Lions manager Gareth Southgate, who rewarded Maguire with a call-up to the England World Cup squad.
“If someone said to me at the start of the season you will play every game, get player of the year and play for England as well, I would have thought I was dreaming,” said Maguire, according to the Leicester Mercury.
“It has been a great season for me personally. To play every minute of every game, it has been a great first season with Leicester and to get the player of the season award as well has topped it off.
“I am really pleased with how it has gone and we want to kick on as a team next season.
“It is the biggest tournament in the world, the World Cup, and as a young boy you dream about playing for your country at the World Cup. It is the pinnacle of anyone’s career.”
“Four years ago I would have been watching it on the television,” he added.
“The Euros I actually went to one of the games in France, so it will be nice to go from watching from the stands to actually playing two years later."
