Gallas: Martial has himself to blame for SWC snub

Cape Town - Manchester United winger Anthony Martial wasted his chance to play for France at the 2018 Soccer World Cup in Russia, according to William Gallas.

The 22-year-old was not called up to Didier Deschamps' World Cup squad, but Gallas has little sympathy for the player. The former Chelsea and Arsenal defender believes Martial only has himself to blame.

"I don't feel sorry for him because he had the opportunity," the former France international told Goal.com website.

"He was in the squad many times before. I think he missed his chance go to the World Cup."

Martial was part of the France squad that reached the European Championship final on home soil in 2016. He has been capped 18 times by Les Bleus, since making his debut in 2015.

"He didn't perform at his best for the whole season," Gallas added. "To go to the World Cup, you have to perform all season.

"You can't be up and down, that's what has made the difference. He is still young and maybe he will learn. He has great quality and it is a shame for him."
