The decline of SA football

accreditation
Dear Editor,

I have been thinking about the state of football in SA, especially in the light of Bafana Bafana's poor showing of late and their expected early exit from the World Cup.

What has happened to football in the new SA? We went from winning the Cup of Nations in 1996 to Norman Nowhere in 2010 - and this in a country with unbelievable potential and millions and millions of rands that have been pumped into the game.

Surely one of the biggest scandals in the new SA has to be the decline of football.

How can a country with so much raw talent and where so much money has been pumped into the game be going backwards so badly?

The publication of the book, player and referee, conflicting interests and the 2010 FIFA World Cup makes interesting reading and certainly raises many questions about local (as well as international funding) but it also comes hot on the heels of SAFA finally appearing to recognise the need for more structure at grass roots.

Where have they been for the past 14 years and where has the money gone?
