Dear Editor,
With the all-out efforts being taken to demonstrate a readiness for the SWC from a security and crime prevention point of view and seeing statements from the police along the lines that all focus will be on the SWC by all security forces, I wonder what (if any) measures are being put in place to police the rest of the country that is not involved in the SWC?
Traditionally our suburbs and cities are underserved by police due to shortages, private security firms try and fill in the many gaps.
From a criminal's perspective it could be an ideal opportunity to target homes, businesses, shops and carry out car jackings, while the SWC stadiums and surrounds are safe and manned to the hilt by police, and providing a great diversion.
What about the rest? I have not seen or heard any plans for this scenario.
Are we in for a spate of non-SWC related crime which then can be conveniently swept aside as having no bearing on us hosting a "crime free SWC"?
