Coentrao fears the worst

Cape Town - Portugal defender Fabio Coentrao fears that he will not take any further part in his country's World Cup campaign.

Coentrao was stretchered off just one hour into his team’s 4-0 defeat against Germany on Monday night after picking up a groin strain, and the expectation is that he might be sidelined for at least ten days, depending on how serious the injury is.

With Portugal being in a precarious position at the bottom of Group G, that could very well mean that Coentrao’s 2014 campaign is over.

"I honestly think my World Cup is over," said.

"I’m sure the injury is serious. I hope I’m wrong. These things happen. It’s one of the saddest days of my life," added Coentrao, who could not contribute when his team were severely under the cosh.

However, the Real Madrid midfielder has not given up all hope just yet, suggesting that Portugal still have a considerable amount to play for in this tournament.

"Despite the result we could still get through to the next round," added Coentrao.

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
