Cape Town - Who is currently the best football player in the world? According to FIFA's index rankings, France striker Karim Benzema tops the charts.

The Real Madrid player scored 9.79 out of 10, and is ranked ahead of second-placed James Rodriguez - who still leads the Golden Boot by scoring six goals at the World Cup for Colombia before being knocked out by Brazil in the quarter-finals - and compatriot Raphael Varane, who is placed third.

Completing the top six are Brazil's Thiago Silva, Germany's Mats Hummels and Netherlands' Arjen Robben. Neymar is ranked eighth, while Lionel Messi is 13th.

Benzema will be unable to improve his ranking after France were eliminated by Germany in their quarter-final clash.
