2010-06-28 14:05

Cape Town - Former Bafana Bafana skipper Neil Tovey has been fired from his now former club AmaZulu FC with immediate effect.

The following press release was officially released by the club: "The AmaZulu board of directors have decided to terminate the current head coach’s contract, Neil Tovey, with AmaZulu Football Club with immediate effect.

The club is reviewing CV’s from international coaches and will make an announcement in the very near future on who will take up this vacant post. There was an agreement between the club and the former coach on certain key focus areas such as league position and these were not achieved.

No further discussions on this matter will be entertained with the media until a follow up board meeting has been concluded to discuss further issues related to the 2010/2011 technical team and players."

If it an outflow of performance management, OK. But PLEASE be consistant and apply it throughout the whole football structures. I am sure there are many officials and coaches who performs worse.

  • louwrens - 2010-06-28 14:30

typical S.A soccer, we will ever become proffesional.

  • FOTA - 2010-06-28 14:32

Mistake, big, big mistake. HUGE. He was doing great things for the club and just starting to show some forward momentum and now they have fired him. It is the sole reason that Amazulu constantly underperforms, stupid boardroom decisions from people who know nothing about the game. Morons. I have supported home KZN teams forever, but that ends now.

Gud riddance, this should have been done long time ago.He wont be missed at all.He treated the club like his spaza shop firing good players(Bafo Biyela) simply because he disliked them,he didnt have clubs love at heart.

  • Dronkie - 2010-06-28 14:41

a Shocker after Amazulu had thier best seaon yet...or could Tovey be heading for Bafana Bafana?

big mistake amazulu will playing in the vela league came next season and their foreign coach will be long gone by then

  • colin - 2010-06-28 15:09

Africa will never change - because of board of directors eg. Amazulu that hire and fire - they expect to win titles overnight . Similiar Bafana fate was shown at the SWC - change coaches and were we are- did not qualify after round one. Will they ever ever learn .....

  • Proudly - 2010-06-28 15:29

These people will get nowhere, how can they be so big headed, watch this space they going down just like my beloved sundowns after tovey....

  • ERIC - 2010-06-28 15:45

    A very big mistake

  • Jerome Small - 2010-06-28 16:03

He took them to a Cup Final last season. Amazulu are perennial relegation candidates because of their amatuer administration in a proffessional league. They will be struggling again next season. I agree with Mario-back to Mvela with their foreign coach. Have´nt Amazulu seen the performance of foreign coaches at the world cup? The only foreign coach still in the Cup is with Ghana- England, SA., Ivory Coast, Nigeria, Switzerland all gone. Minow football countries like the Koreas(N&S), New Zealand and the USA had great tournaments with coaches from their own country. OK North Korea got a pasting from Portugal, but apart from that they played above peoples expectations.

what a total cock-up! this has been their best season yet and they decide to do this????????

  • Menzie Gumede - 2010-06-28 17:14

This is childish. As a die hard fan of AmaZulu I believe Neil was not given any chance. When are we going to learn that foreign coaches are killing our soccer.Neil took Amazulu to semi's of Telkom and then final of Nedbank "that was history alone".He also took a good decision about Bafo Biyela as you can see Bafo is struggling at Arrows.

He was riding on clive barker's success from the season before last. How many of you actually watch amaZulu's games? Clive Barker built that team, the players that Tovey brought did not perform (i.e Mokoro whom he played every game). He fired the best player in the Club, Bafo Biyela. He wanted to let go of Chintu (a good defender). He wanted to bring Gauteng pensioners (Marlin, Manqoba Ngwenya & kaizer Jr.) when we have a talented young team. The less said about his substitution when lossing, the better. Had Barker been retained as coach last season he would have brought better results (a cup and a better league position). The biggest mistake would be to bring a foreign coach or these old failed PLS coaches like Jomo, Trott and De Sa. My preferred replacements would be: 1 Clive Barker, 2 Manqoba Mnqithi, 3.Mark Fish on a 3 seasons contract.

another one bites the dust, they have had a good what now Amazulu, .................I have just started Supporting Amazulu they have featured more and more in games and we are learning who the players are, but I started watching them because of Neil Tovey. So now ?????? some foreign coach that will be paid some HUGE fee and not produce they results anyway. Good Luck Neil

  • glen - 2010-06-28 18:04

AND their is only 1 African team in the final 16 and they wonder why ! When will they ever learn.A coach does not make a team win or lose, the players do !

  • anashm - 2010-06-28 18:16

Neil Tovey did a good job at Amazulu. When will Amazulu Board member ever learn!!! This is scandalous!! Hope my dear team is not relegated at the end of the new season!!!

  • JACK - 2010-06-28 18:51

Well done. All African clubs should have only African coaches!

  • henk - 2010-06-28 19:13

@jack - if you want a disaster, you hand a success to an african, look what africa looks like!

  • Willie - 2010-06-28 20:18

@JACK. No Jack my man. You're not living in the same SA as I do.Look at all the KAK you created from 1994.Only 16 years and SA is moer toe.Your soccer team is useless(all black players) Look athe rugby, there's white people and they're the world champs. Cricket, white players as well, and look what they're achieved the last couple of years.Look at our swimmers, white and win gold olympic medals. Look at the Police and Correctional officials., Black and they're useless. Look at the inmates. 95% BLACK,AND AMAZULU FIRES THE ONLY WHITE MAN.

  • Bulldog - 2010-06-29 08:16

Why must there be people that is pre-occupied with race. Willie go to Australia!!!

  • floyd - 2010-06-29 09:16

You can not please the hard to please boardroom directors, Tovey brought stabity and improvement to the team. He laid a foundation, even if he did not get what they wanted but there was an improvement and now back to laying foundation........forever building like Bafana Bafana.

  • Nick - 2010-06-29 16:39

Where are we going with soccer in this country.I feel Niel was doing a great job with the assistance of Clive Barker. Why is it that whenever their is a wobbly we fire the coach instead of giving him more support. We will never become a united soccer nation if we keep on firing coaches, wheres the stability.Instead of employing coaches from overseas paying them a fortune. Why dont we send potentially good coaches overseas for coaching clinics at a 10 of the price that we spend on oversea's based coaches that are only here to milk us and retire thereafter. Are we so stupid that we can,t see through this.If only we spent a little more on our local coaches to be trained overseas.Imagine sending 6 guys overseas for 6 months,1 to England,1 to Germany,1 to Brazil, 1 to Italy,1 to Argentina and say one to Spain. Imagine when these guys come back to SA and brainstorm on what they have learn't overseas, you won't need to employ an overseas coach. You would have a good understanding on how coaching is developed overseas.Wake up SAFA and smell the coffee. Also where is the quota system in SA soccer a great player like BOOOTH was not even given 5 minutes on the park and yet Mokoena let through 2 clear goals and not showing any leadership skills. God bless SA Soccer. Clive and Gavin and Gordon you guys are our only hope in this country, the rest are only their to line their pockets with soccer as their last resort.
