Takuma to become SA's mascot

2012-11-27 19:15

Johannesburg - Takuma, the mascot for the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) soccer tournament, will become the mascot for all sport in South Africa, the sports ministry has announced.

A hippo who wears a yellow sports kit, Takuma was designed by a pupil at Dikgorwaneng Primary School, in Hammanskraal, and was unveiled as the AFCON mascot at a draw last month in Durban.

"We are taking this mascot forward as a sports mascot," Deputy Sports Minister Gert Oosthuizen said on Tuesday.

"Takuma will be the mascot you will see for many years to come."

Oosthuizen was speaking at the prize giving, in Hammanskraal, of the schools competition for the design of the mascot.

Shingo, the mascot which placed second in the competition, would be used for school sports in future, and Hagozonke, which was third, would be the mascot for the promotion of drug-free sport.

Dikgorwaneng Primary received soccer and netball equipment for winning the competition, and a R1 000 food hamper.

Not the most inspired mascot I've ever seen. A bit premature to say "for many years to come". Is this because it's the epitome of mascots, there are no further ideas permitted or because there's a massive franchising deal guaranteed to keep generations of cadres getting much money for nothing?

Have a rhino for a mascot. Might be the only time some get to see one

It's good to have a sports mascot in SA I hope we'll appreciate as the nation.

If they can't open a back door, they'll build a back door to finally bounce the Springbok. Mark my words.

A hippo to represent athleticism? Who smoked their socks and approved this? A hippo is a more accurate representation or the most of the woman in government!

Will takuma be armed with a panga ,knobkerrie or unlicensed firearm?

and TaZuma to become SA's burden...

  • mart.botha - 2012-11-28 06:02

Good for a primary school pupil in Hammanskraal...... not nearly convinced that a sea cow is the best subject on which to base a sporting mascot. But I guess the choice had less to do with sport than with pandering to the politicos.

  • juannepierre - 2012-11-28 06:45

Lame. Is this suppose to be good news or bad? It just seems so superfluous in a politically heated country. Very lame.

  • rob.whiteford - 2012-11-28 07:42

aren't Takuma and Shingo are both Japanese names though?

A Fat aggressive animal that wallows in the mud. Kind of like the ANC wallowing in the filth of corruption and nepotism.

  • darryl.maze1 - 2012-11-28 08:20

You can keep that hippo mascot for soccer. Dont even think about making it a mascot for rugby. Rugby is a SPRINGBOK and will forever be the SPRINGBOK. Thats hippo mascot should be for the ANC government, fat and lazy.

A hippo as a mascot!...What the hell happened to Zakumi ?rope him in rather, and what animal was he in any case,Well whatever but leave the Bokkie out of this..A hippo yesses ,considering we have a tendency of repeating words "Bafana Bafana","ama Boko Boko" what is this going to be now ama "hippo hippo"...That just doesn't sound right....

  • sjvaughn.naidu.33 - 2012-11-28 09:45

I agree with many a hippo for sport hmmmmm? is a hippo regarded as an icon of the future? ok simply here it is fantastic idea from the primary school student and yes a great achievemnt but if it is to remain for many years to come dont you think the student should be gaining much more R 1000.00 food hamper can barely make a single household requirements let alone a school .I honestly hope that they concider a doing much more for the child in terms of improving his future and is there a reason not mentioning his name give him exposure for his talent in order him to grow .
