SuperSport clinch major deal

2011-12-08 09:09

Johannesburg - In an exclusive deal for the continent, SuperSport will broadcast both the Africa Cup of Nations and Euro 2012 next year, reports the Sowetan.

SuperSport will broadcast all 32 AFCON matches live and in high definition, while the Euro will be broadcast exclusively live also in HD. The Afcon deal, especially, marks a highlight for SuperSport as it incorporates a number of continental football properties.

The AFCON arrangement will be for the next three editions (2012, 2013 and 2015). In addition, the rights include the African Nations Championship (2014), African Youth Championship (2013 and 2015), CAF Super Cup (2012-2016), CAF Champions League (remaining matches, plus 2012-2016), CAF Confederation Cup (remaining matches, plus 2012-2016) and the CAF Under-23 Championships.

It all adds up to a staggering array of content and confirms SuperSport as the pre-eminent football broadcaster in Africa.

SuperSport's AFCON coverage will include a 24-hour channel dedicated to the event in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea.

SABC lost because they give us raw deal.....late games after Generation.

SuperSport is greedy. Why not leave some rights for TopTV or eTV and SABC who will be launching 6 and 18 digital channels respectively next year?

the sabc is struggling with only bafana matches, and if you follow the news there is no use telling you about the sabc's finances. good for supersport giving us quality

More Soccer.... How bout a Rugby Channel???

      Kgaogelo - 2011-12-08 10:59

      Rugby is useless man.

      Peter - 2011-12-08 11:41

This is simple, though rugby is watched by the minority but there is a valid point to have their own channel. DSTV is for the people by the people, I'm sure DSTV can sacrifice one useless channel for all rugby fans.

What's not to like about the comment?? I did not shoot soccer down, I merely feel that there is a market for a Rugby Channel.

'm for supersport gettin all there broadcasting rights- but i feel that rugby fans are getting a raw deal, i don't watch rugby but on compact there is no dedicated rugby channel or all the rugby fans can afford premium?

      Heiku - 2011-12-08 12:44

If they had a rugby channel on compact they would lose A LOT of premium subscribers as a lot of people have it just for the rugby. So.. blackmail basically.

no one can do it better than supersport, next we want the bafanabafana rights...

Great!! So once again the national broadcaster loses out on any decent sports coverage!! Lucky for some who can afford the inflated rates asked by DSTV. What a pitty that all major soccer/rugby + cricket matches are reserved for satelite viewers!! SABC really needs to get its house in order. I don't know why I bother paying my TV licence anymore!! Nothing decent on TV. Good thing I enjoy reading!!!
