Nedbank Cup final a milestone for Maritzburg

Cape Town - Maritzburg United chairman Farook Kadodia has praised Fadlu Davids for leading the Team of Choice to their first ever final in top flight football.

Kadodia described beating Mamelodi Sundowns in the semi-final to reach the final of the Nedbank Cup as a milestone for his team.

He said Davids, who was appointed the club's head coach in June last year, has grabbed the opportunity granted to him with both hands to lead the Team of Choice to their best ever season in the history of the club.

Maritzburg has been the surprise package of the 2017/18 season as they are also in third position in the Premiership table and stand a chance of playing continental football next season.

Kadodia told Supersport: "This is a milestone for Maritzburg United. It's been a long journey. Fifteen years in the National Soccer League and our first cup final. It's full of emotions.

"I must thank the people, the fans. For fifteen years, they have been behind us and they have built a brand. I must thank the coach, Davids; he has done a sterling job.

"I always believed in his abilities this season and I told him that we need to do something better than last season. What a benchmark."

Kadodia also praised their youthful squad for rising to the occasion for the Pietermaritzburg-based outfit.

He added: "I think Fadlu and his technical team have done an excellent job with this team. The young team that we have, they have produced the best results."

United are set to take on Free State Stars in the final at Cape Town Stadium on Saturday, May 19.

Kick-off is at 19:00.
