CT City targeting clean sweep against Wits

Cape Town - Wits will be in buoyant mood for the visit of Cape Town City on Wednesday in the Nedbank Cup Round of 32 at the Bidvest Stadium.

This will be the fourth meeting between the two teams in 2017/18 campaign with City claiming three victories over the Absa Premiership champions.

Gavin Hunt's charges made an horrendous start to their title defence, winning just two of their opening 14 games to become embroiled in a relegation battle.

However, a resurgence in 2018, suffering only one defeat in their next six league outings, and they enter the cup-tie on a five-match unbeaten run.

The Students came from behind to claim a 1-1 draw with Kaizer Chiefs on Saturday, having beaten SuperSport United (twice) and Bloemfontein Celtic since the turn of the year.

The Citizens, meanwhile, have blown hot and cold this term after making an impressive start under new coach Benni McCarthy which saw them reach the MTN 8 final, where they lost to Matsatsantsa on penalties.

City were early challengers for top-fight honours, but just two wins in the new year has seen them drop seven points off Mamelodi Sundowns at the top of the table.

They narrowly lost 1-0 to the Brazilians on Friday and will be looking for a response against Wits in midweek, and an improvement from last term when they were knocked out of the competition at the first hurdle by minnows Acornbush United.

Kick-off is at 19:30.
