Comitis calls for 'home' cup finals ahead of MTN8 showdown

Cape Town - Ahead of Saturday's MTN8 final against SuperSport in Durban, Cape Town City boss John Comitis feels that neutral cup final venues should be done away with.

City will be meeting SuperSport United at the Moses Mabhida Stadium for an MTN8 final for the second year running after Matsatsantsa won on penalties 12-months back.

Comitis says he doesn't have a problem with playing in Durban, but would have preferred to play either in Cape Town or even Pretoria, SuperSport's home base.

"I'm happy with Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban for Saturday's final because it's the most neutral venue we can get for the two teams involved in the final," he was quoted saying by the Cape Times.

"Ultimately, though, I'd like to see Cup finals in the PSL played at the venues of one of the two finalists, where the luck of the draw plays a role in who gets home advantage."

The Citizens boss feels it would fairer on the fans of those teams playing in the final if there was the possibility of playing at home.

"On Saturday, the final is in Durban, which means we are servicing football fans but not the supporters of the two clubs involved. Yes, there will be a small contingent travelling to Durban for the final, but that's not ideal.

"The two clubs have made the final, but their fans are not reaping the benefit of what they have achieved. By playing the match at one of the finalists' venues, it means that at least one of the teams can use the occasion to build their brand.

"And, even if one of the finalists has to travel to the home base of the other, this is a Cup final and a team needs no other motivation; so that's not really an issue."
