Chippa roll out added armour to prepare for Chiefs fans

Cape Town - Chippa United operations officer Lukhanyo Mzinzi has revealed the club are taking extra security measures for Saturday's Nedbank Cup semi-final against Kaizer Chiefs.

Last season at Moses Mabhida Stadium, Chiefs fans invaded the pitch before destroying television cameras and injuring a member of the security team following a defeat to Free State Stars in the semi-finals.

As such, the Chilli Boys are taking all precautions to ensure that certain sections of Chiefs' fans are not allowed to run riot in the event that results don't go to plan on the field of play.

He told Kick-Off: "The PSL is more in charge, more than the club. (The) PSL is the one who appoints security that will be servicing the match on that day. The status of Chippa and Chiefs is the same in this match, we are just coming to play.

"But obviously because we are the home team we took the initiative because we've had in the past a similar experience.

"We remember with Chiefs there was a time it was difficult where we beat them here at home, and there was also an incident where Stuart Baxter was still in charge where a fan was shot here inside the stadium because someone tried to pull a gun from the police officer. So we've had those incidents in the past and we have improved our security and numbers tremendously."

Saturday's clash is scheduled for 20:15.
