Chiefs contingent racing to be fit for cup semi-final

Cape Town - Kaizer Chiefs have four players racing against the clock to be ready in time for Saturday night's Nedbank Cup semi-final showdown with Free State Stars in Durban.

Ramahlwe Mphahlele, Erick Mathoho, Teenage Hadebe and Gustavo Paez could all be in the mix to feature on Saturday if they can prove they have overcome recent injuries, while Emmanuel Letlotlo and Kabelo Mahlasela are still expected to be sidelined for a while longer.

Chiefs physiotherapist Dave Milner provided the following update on the club's website:

"Ramahlwe Mphahlele has recovered from the hamstring injury and will undergo a final fitness test this week," said Milner.

"Erick Mathoho is progressing well after the head injury sustained last week against Chippa United. We are monitoring him and will have an update before the trip to Durban.

"Gustavo Paez has joined team training after suffering a calf muscle strain two weeks ago.

"Teenage Hadebe is under assessment from an ankle injury sustained against Chippa United. He is doing well and we hope he will recover in time for the Nedbank Cup semi-final this weekend.

"Emmanuel Letlotlo is involved in full training and is currently looking to get match fit."

Mahlasela, who signed in January only to suffer a serious knee injury before making his debut, has meanwhile voiced his appreciation for the support he's received and is optimistic that he's well on the way to full recovery after surgery.

"I was frustrated because of not being able to play, but the tremendous support I got from my family and friends helped a lot.

"I am glad to be at a club that has the kind of medical care as Chiefs have. I feel good because I am getting better every time at training. My confidence is returning as well.

"I don't know how it will be when I get into match situations, but I will be ready when the time comes."

The match against Ea Lla Koto takes place at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday.

Kick-off is at 20:15.
