Johannesburg - South Africa will sorely miss former SAFA vice-president Leepile Taunyane's steadfast commitment and dedication, President Jacob Zuma said on Wednesday.

"We wish to express our deepest condolences to his family, the community of Alexandra and the football fraternity at large.

"May his soul rest in peace."

Taunyane was admitted to a Johannesburg hospital on Saturday after experiencing breathing difficulties.

He died on Wednesday, at the age of 85.

"He used the beautiful game to make a contribution to the social needs of societies.

"This is the man who helped football build its first own stadium, something that was prohibited by the apartheid regime."
