Johannesburg - Soccer fans came out in their numbers to pay tribute to the late Bafana Bafana and Kaizer Chiefs star, John "Shoes" Moshoeu at the Grace Bible Church in Soweto on Friday.
Mostly dressed in their club T-shirts, some of the fans entered the church in songs popularly tuned during soccer matches.
Former soccer stars, Lucas Radebe, Andre Arendse and Arthur Zwane were also amongst the dignitaries.
Gospel tunes played softly from the church speakers creating a sombre atmosphere. Bouquets of brightly coloured flowers adorned the stage.
Three soccer T-shirts worn by the fallen soccer legend were placed on the stage while a slide show depicting pictures of Moshoeu in his prime played on a large screen.
Former Bafana Bafana coach Clive Barker and current coach Ephraim "Shakes" Mashaba were among those expected to address mourners at the memorial.
Moshoeu, 49, died of cancer at 15:00 on Tuesday.
He was part of the Bafana Bafana team that won the country’s only Africa Cup of Nations title in 1996. He was capped 73 times and scored eight times for South Africa.
