Oliphant to lead Chan LOC

Johannesburg - Molefi Oliphant has been unveiled as the new African Championship of Nations (Chan) 2014 local organising committee (LOC) board chairperson on Tuesday, following last week's withdrawal of Mwelo Nonkonyana.

"We would like to express our sincere gratification of this new appointment," LOC chief executive Mvuzo Mbebe said in a statement on Tuesday.

"We are fast approaching kick-off (of the tournament) and the appointment of Dr Oliphant's calibre will without a doubt give us confidence that we will deliver yet another memorable and exceptional tournament."

SAFA vice-president Nonkonyana was last week suspended because of public remarks he made about Gordon Igesund's future as Bafana Bafana coach.

Nonkonyana was reported as saying Bafana had to perform at Chan 2014.

SAFA consequently withdrew Nonkonyana's appointment as a director of the board of the 2013 Afcon/2014 Chan LOC.

Oliphant serves on the CAF Executive Committee and Fifa Appeals Board.

The board expressed its appreciation to Nonkonyana for delivering Afcon 2013.
