Marques chuffed with upset

Thohoyandou - National First Division (NFD) side Black Leopards coach Zeca Marques revealed that his side went to face Kaizer Chiefs with nothing to lose but everything to gain considering the Phefeni Glamour Boys’ form this season.

Lidoda Duvha shocked the South African football fraternity when they defeated the Amakhosi 2-1 in the last 16 encounter of the Nedbank Cup last Saturday, thanks to Morgan Shivambu and Roggert Nyundu strikes.

“Lollipop” insisted that his charges were well motivated ahead of facing the Absa Premiership log leaders in their own back yard and they managed to snatch a win through their tactics of minimising Chiefs’ attacking style of play.

“We just had to inspire the whole team heading into the weekend’s game,” Marquez told Sport24 in an exclusive interview on Wednesday.

“All the motivations were there because we were playing Chiefs at FNB (stadium).

“To be honest with you, we had nothing to lose but everything to gain considering how Chiefs are performing this season.

“So we spoke about the possibility of minimising their attacks and we were victorious on the day.”

The 53-year-old mentor also extended his praises to prolific striker, Nyundu, for his positive impact since joining Leopards in the January transfer window.

The 27-year-old has found the back of the net on seven occasions in all competitions thus far.

“He is very excellent and so amazing to watch,” continued Marquez.

“He scored in almost every game he played since joining the team.

“He is very passionate and dedicated to the game and I believe he can still score many goals for us this season.

“He is a very good striker and his off-ball movements are also brilliant.”

Leopards will next face Cape Town club Vasco da Gama at home in the quarter-finals of the R6m competition.

The date for this encounter is yet to be confirmed.
