Banyana, Zim share spoils

Johannesburg - Banyana Banyana came from behind to draw 2-2 with Zimbabwe in their international friendly, at Dobsonville Stadium on Saturday.

From the first counter-attack, Zimbabwe’s Rutendo Makore got the better of Letago Madiba in a one-on-one situation. Madiba brought down Makore, leaving referee Maria Kolokotoane with little choice but to award a penalty.

Makore scored from the spot with ease, as the visitors took a 1-0 lead in the seventh minute. Sensing Banyana had problems in dealing with long balls, Zimbabwe pumped high balls into the penalty area.

Minutes after the opener, Marjory Nyaumwe outpaced the static Banyana defence, and her pile driver gave Roxanne Barker in goal no chance, to make it 2-0.

It could have been 3-0 but Makore’s audacious effort moments later hit the crossbar.

Banyana then came out of their shell as Silindile Ngubane's effort crashed into the woodwork.

On the stroke of half time, Ngubane’s shot gave Chido Dzingirai no chance to make it 2-1 going into the second half. Robyn Moodaly could have equalised for Banyana but her long range effort was parried for a corner by Dzingirai as Zimbabwe hung on.

New Banyana coach Vera Pauw’s side found the equaliser from the boot of former captain, Amanda Dlamini who was introduced as a late substitute.

She made it 2-2 as Zimbabwe finally cracked under pressure and the hosts completed their comeback.

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
