Shilton banned from driving

Colchester - Former England goalkeeper Peter Shilton has been banned from driving for 20 months after having more than double the legal amount of alcohol in his system when stopped by police.

The 63-year-old Shilton, who played a record 125 times for his country, admitted driving under the influence of alcohol when he appeared at Colchester Magistrates' Court on Tuesday.

He was caught on February 24 in Colchester, a town northeast of London, after an anonymous tip-off to police. Shilton had been drinking wine at a family celebration throughout the day but said he did not think he was over the limit.

Shilton was also fined £1 020.

Shilton played more than 1 000 competitive matches for 11 different clubs in his career.
