SAFA wishes Pirates well

Johannesburg - The SA Football Association (SAFA) would like to wish Orlando Pirates all the best in their CAF Champions League fixture against AC Leopards of Democratic Republic of Congo.

The match will take place on Saturday, 20 July 2013 at the Orlando Stadium in Soweto. Kickoff is at 20:00.

This will be Bucs’ first match in the last eight of the competition.

“On behalf of the South African Football Association, I would like to take this opportunity to wish Orlando Pirates well in their CAF Champions League clash this weekend. They are the only hope of the country in this competition and have proven that they can do it like when they won the 1995 title,” said Safa president Kirsten Nematandani.

“It was tough for them to get this far, and no one says it’s going to be easy but I believe they have what it takes to do well. Having come this far this year, I believe they can go all the way and emulate the squad of 18 years ago. We urge all the football-loving people of South African to set aside their club differences and support Orlando Pirates in this important fixture as they are flying high the flag of this country.”

Pirates were drawn into group A of the tournament which consists of Egyptian sides, seven-time champions Al Ahly and five-time winners Zamalek as well as AC Leopards.

The Buccaneers secured their last eight spot with a 3-2 aggregate victory over TP Mazembe of DR Congo. The 1995 CAF Champions League winners finished that match with 10 men after captain Lucky Lekgwathi was given his marching orders. He will also miss the weekend’s clash.
