Rangers booted out of SPL

London - Rangers were dramatically kicked out of next season's Scottish Premier League after rival clubs voted overwhelmingly to exclude the ailing Glasgow giants, it was confirmed on Wednesday.

The soon-to-be-liquidated Ibrox club had applied to rejoin the league after reforming as a new company (newco) but their request was turned down following a vote of the other clubs which make up the Scottish top-flight.

"At today's General Meeting, SPL clubs today voted overwhelmingly to reject the application from Rangers newco to join the SPL," an SPL statement said.

The statement came after more than five hours of talks at Hampden today as Rangers' new management clung on to the hope of staving off exclusion.

It caps a humiliating fall from grace for the most successful club in Scottish football, who were plunged into crisis earlier this year after entering administration following a tax dispute.

It was not immediately clear where Rangers' new incarnation will begin life next season. One option under consideration is to start in the First Division, the league below the SPL.

It's a pity to c a big team like Rangers booted out. From the sales point of view, the SPL is not going 2 befenefit especially Celtic. Rangers n Celtic were a force to be reckoned with, they basically made the SPl to be interesting

Now SPL will be on a huge decline. Celtic will basically romp the league each year now that they dont have competition. However all is not yet lost, the new club (called Newco Rangers) has adopted the contracts (or rather the players agreed to move their contracts to the new club) and are applying to play in the second tier league of scotland. One of two things might happen, a) the players stick to rangers (in a similar way to Juve in 06) and gain promotion the following season and then once again fight for the title or b) even after they moved their contracts, the players all leave because they only agreed to stay if they were going to play top flight football and thus ending any hope to challenge Celtic in the near future. ....................very sad day for football
