Wits duo tests negative after coronavirus fears

Bidvest Wits midfielder Thabang Monare has confirmed that he does not have the coronavirus after undergoing medical tests.

Monare and teammate Hashim Domingo were tested for the virus after showing signs of heavy flu last week.

Both players have since tested negative for the virus that has swept globe.

Monare told KickOff: "No, I'm fine. Yes, I just had flu, but it wasn't something to be concerned about. It was only flu.

"It started on Thursday so I had a hoarse voice, so ja I don't have a coronavirus.

"Ja we went to the doctor, and the doctor said it was just a flu. He gave us tablets so I'm alright now.

"Hey it's tough nowadays, a person can't even cough even a bit or sneeze [laughs]."

South Africa president Cyril Ramaphosa declared the coronavirus pandemic a state of disaster on Sunday and said no gatherings of more than 100 people are allowed at any given time in a confined space.

The President's announcement means that all football matches could be postponed with the Premier Soccer League (PSL) set to have a meeting to plot the way forward.

Monare said players are not worried that the league could come to a halt as the health and safety of players, staff and fans was more important.

The Clever Boys player said: "Ja it's not like a worry you see, it's definitely more about the safety of other players and people in general.

"Ja so anything that needs to be done to stop the spread of this virus needs to be done, for the safety of people and their health.

"Obviously it's going to come with the medical people who know better you see in terms of what's going on with the virus. We want the world to be a safe place."
