Wits beat Matsatsantsa to move off the bottom

Cape Town - Struggling champions Bidvest Wits recorded only their third win in the league this season with a 2-0 victory over SuperSport United at the Bidvest Stadium on Wednesday.

As it happened: Wits v SuperSport United

The result sees Wits moving above Ajax Cape Town and into 15th spot - one point behind Platinum Stars.

The Clever Boys were nearly in front in the fourth minute when Lehlohonolo Majoro's header was saved by Reyaad Pieterse before he struck the upright on the rebound.

Majoro had another effort blocked before the Braamfontein-side deservedly opened the scoring through Bongani Khumalo, the former SuperSport United defender finishing brilliantly on the half volley after Thulani Hlatshwayo's nod down from a corner kick in the 16th minute.

A shell-shocked Matsatsansta found themselves further behind just three minutes later when James Keene muscled his way into the box and scored with a powerfully-struck shot from a very tight angle.

The Students continued on the offensive and could have had more goals if Majoro had not headed over, while Pietersen made an excellent stop with his feet to keep out Khumalo.

The action was to subside in the periods both before and after half-time as neither goalkeeper was tested.

Indeed, with the Clever Boys desperate for victory and happy to sit back and defend their lead, an off-form Matsatsantsa could find no way back into the game as their winless run in the league was extended to seven matches.
