Wits add American twist to PSL squad

Cape Town - Bidvest Wits have announced the signing of goalkeeper Jean-Pierre van der Merwe, who has played for the George Washington University in the USA for the last three years.

The Clever Boys confirmed the signing on their Twitter account as they welcomed Van der Merwe, who will provide competition for the team's number one position with current first-choice shot-stopper Moeneeb Josephs.

The 23-year-old Van der Merwe was born in South Africa and was mentored by coach Steve Haupt at Berea Albion.

Haupt said: "I think Jean-Pierre will put Moeneeb Josephs under a lot of pressure. The nice thing is that he's worked with Manchester United's former goalkeeper coach, Eric Steele.

"So he comes with that sort of pedigree and decided to return home as nobody knows him."

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
