Cape Town - Polokwane City fought back from a goal down as they scored a late equaliser to rescue a 1-1 draw against SuperSport United at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Tuesday.

The visitors made the better start as United struggled to get going in the opening stages. Rise and Shine created two early chances before Eric Tinkler's men took control of proceedings.

The first opportunity came to Rodney Ramagalela in the 11th minute when he was released through on goal by Puleng Tlolane, but Reyaad Pieterse was on hand to make a save with his foot.

Jabu Maluleke then wasted a free-kick in a dangerous position two minutes later as he curled the ball over the crossbar from 25 yards out.

George Chigova had to be alert on 19 minutes when a poor defensive pass was intercepted by Thuso Phala, who played in Maphosa Modiba on the left, but the keeper raced off his line to deny the midfielder inside the box.

Morgan Gould failed to hit the target with a header from a 26th-minute corner that went well over the bar, but the defender headed past Chigova at the back post five minutes later as getting on the end of a free-kick from the left.

The final action of the first half saw Chigova pull of a double save to keep out Kingston Nkhatha in the 41st minute, after the striker held off his marker on the left to surge into the box before testing the glovemen with a shot and a header on the rebound from a tight angle.

Gould was presented with another chance eight minutes into the second half, but his header cleared the bar from a free-kick on the right, while Phala hit a tame effort straight at Chigova from 20 yards out after playing a one-two with Letsholonyane on 55 minutes.

Ramagalela threatened at the other end moments later with a first-time shot from 19 yards out that flew past the right post, but the hosts remained on the front foot.

Teboho Mokoena drilled an effort wide of the left post from long range on 69 minutes and Phala blazed well over the target from 20 yards out three minutes later after cutting inside from the left.

The Limpopo outfit made a late push for an equaliser as Tlolane latched onto a punched clearance from Pieterse and flashed a half-volley well wide of the left post from 22 yards out in stoppage time.

Their efforts were rewarded when Tlolane ran onto Dominic Chungwa's flicked header from a long goal-kick and saw his shot take a deflection off Clayton Daniel and loop over Pieterse into the back of the net.

It was a cruel blow for SuperSport, who conceded in the sixth minute of added time, with the fourth official having indicated five minutes.
