Cape Town - Maritzburg United's management will once again open their cheque book to bolster their squad with at least two players during the January transfer window period.

The Team of Choice had a decent first half of the season, which included reaching the Telkom Knockout final, and head into the new year on position eight in the Absa Premiership.

However, the local club failed to reach their first-half target of 20 points, managing 18 after 14 outings.

After Maritzburg's one-all draw against the high-flying Kaizer Chiefs at the weekend, United coach Eric Tinkler said the club will compete in the transfer market.

"There are one or two areas that we need to fix," Tinkler told Sport24.

"I know Gavin (Hunt, Bidvest Wits coach) has been talking about that he has a smaller squad in the league, but I don’t know about that.

"We probably have the smaller team because I think in training, I have 22 players. Just enough to play 11 against 11.

"We have identified areas that we need to strengthen so yes, we will be looking at the market in the January period."

The transfer window opens next Wednesday.

Tinkler did not divulge which positions he is looking to boost, but he is likely to sign at least one central midfielder after the club parted ways with Thamsanqa Sangweni last week.

United have also struggled upfront with just nine goals scored in the Absa Premiership this season despite having well-known goal poacher Jeremy Brockie who has been misfiring so far.
