Tinkler: Maritzburg belong in the PSL

Cape Town - Maritzburg United coach Eric Tinkler revealed his joy after his side stayed in the Premiership following a promotion/relegation playoff win against Royal Eagles on Wednesday.

The 2-0 victory means Maritzburg remain in South Africa's top flight as they have won three out of three playoff matches which is insurmountable for both Eagles and Thskhuma Tsha Madzivhandila.

It caps an unbelievable comeback for the Team of Choice as they spent 17 weeks at the bottom of the standings in 2018/19 before avoiding the automatic drop on the final day at Free State Stars' expense.

The goals in the win over Eagles were scored by Siphesihle Ndlovu and Orlando Pirates loanee Thabiso Kutumela.

Tinkler told SuperSport: "I'm very proud of the boys. I think they responded exceptionally well since my arrival and they need to be given credit for that.

"They have worked very hard and that hard work paid off and I think this club truthfully does not deserve to go down.

"This is a club that belongs in the PSL. It has a fantastic fan base and I think you saw that throughout the time I've been at the club.

"We've filled the stadiums, so they deserve it. They deserve for us to stay. And for the chairperson, Mr [Farook] Kadodia], I think he deserves it for the hard work he puts in. His dedication to football is absolutely fantastic."

United have one more game remaining in the playoffs which is a dead-rubber against TTM at Harry Gwala Stadium on Saturday.

Kick-off is at 15:00.
