Cape Town - Cape Town City head coach Eric Tinkler praised his charges after brushing aside Chippa United 4-1 in an Absa Premiership encounter.

A 10-minute hat-trick from Bhongolwethu Jayiya was enough to power the Citizens to the top of the league - leading Wits with a single point.

However, the Clever Boys have two games in hand with fifth place Mamelodi Sundowns having four games to spare as well.

City started the game with real purpose and showed their intentions in the third minute when Ebrahim Seedat's cross was headed marginally wide of the target by Jayiya.

But he put the hosts ahead soon after, running onto Lehlohonolo Majoro's through-ball before finishing with a clinical strike into the roof of the net.

Jayiya was at it again in the 12th minute, stealing in at the back post to stab home Lebogang Manyama's in-swinging cross.

The hat-trick goal from the former Bidvest Wits winger came just three minutes later, Jayiya nodding the ball in from close range after his initial header had deflected off the crossbar and bounced back into play.

“I thought the performance in the first half was really, really phenomenal, and we could have come into half-time 6-0 up,” Tinkler said as quoted by KickOff.

“Chippa are a possession-based team, and take a lot of risks in their build-up play, and if we pressed them and capitalised on their mistakes, we knew we could hurt them, and we did that.

“At half-time I told the players of the importance of keeping the momentum going and continuing off of what we did in the first half, and that we needed to keep a clean sheet, which we didn’t end up doing - we weren’t compact enough to deal with the one-twos, and were punished for it,” he said.

“But I’m happy with the result, though we could have wrapped it up in the second half with two or three goals which would have made it an extremely comfortable win.”
