Cape Town - SuperSport United confirmed on Wednesday that they have parted ways with attacker Thuso Phala after an ugly war-of-words between the two parties with the player accused of disciplinary issues.

"Following protracted negotiations, SuperSport United and Thuso Phala have come to an agreement to part ways amicably," the club said in a statement.

Phala joined Matsatsantsa on a free transfer from Platinum Stars in July 2013 and was part of the team to win the Telkom Knockout in 2014 and back-to-back Nedbank Cup wins in 2016 and 2017 as well as an MTN8 title in 2017.

SuperSport United CEO Stan Matthews stated, "We are sad to see Thuso go. He has been a part of the club through an extremely successful period in the club's history, four cup wins and a further three cup finals, including the CAF Confederation Cup final.

"His career here was full of memorable moments, including the goal to win Telkom Knockout in 2014 and his vital goal against Zesco United to take us into the semi-final of the CAF Confederation Cup. We will especially miss Thuso's unique dance moves and celebrations, and his character in the dressing room."

Sport24 revealed that Matthews had been left bitterly disappointed by the acrimonious ending to the club's relationship with Phala.

The Bafana Bafana international had six months left on his SuperSport contract but was suspended and appeared before a disciplinary hearing.

Matthews confirmed the winger's contract would not be renewed at the end of the season with the player now released from his contract.

"His contract expires in June and definitely we won’t be renewing it," Matthews said. "There were one or two loan options on the table this week that we evaluated but nothing came out of them and he will see out his contract with us.
