Cape Town - A glancing head by Mxolisi Macuphu a minute from full-time was enough for Supersport United to snatch all three points in their vital Absa Premiership clash against Free State Stars at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Sunday.

The victory moves Matsatsantsa up to fifth position on the PSL table, only two points behind league leaders Orlando Pirates in what is a congested list of teams gunning for the big trophy.

Ea Lla Koto stay deep in a relegation battle as they are only a single point from safety with seven games of the season still remaining.

The hosts set the tone early on as Evans Rusike hit the post and Macuphu had a header saved by Stars keeper Samkelo Mbambo inside the first 10 minutes.

The team from the Central Province were struggling to create chances but with 10 minutes of the first half remaining, Yusuf Jappie picked out Simisani Mathumo who headed wide.

The home team nearly took the lead soon after interval when Grant Kekana struck the crossbar with a close-range header.

Stars were looking to nick a goal on the counter-attack and it nearly paid off as Supersport shot-stopper Ronwen Williams had to save brilliantly to deny Sibusiso Hlubi on 73 minutes.

However, Matsatsantsa got the three points they deserved on the day when Macuphu headed in a cross from the right by Jamie Webber.
