Cape Town - A thrilling battle in Pretoria ended all square on Wednesday night as SuperSport United and Maritzburg United finished 2-2 in their Absa Premiership tie.
Matsatsantsa wasted little time as they went on the attack from the off and were rewarded in the second minute as Kudakwashe Mahachi cut inside from the left, following a pass from Lungu Ghampani, before coolly slotting the ball into the back of the net.
The hosts were in the ascendancy in the early stages and had another chance to score in the 15th minute when Bradley Grobler received a cross in the box, but his volleyed effort flew just over the bar.
Mahachi almost turned provider in the 37th minute as he whipped in a pin-point cross for Teboho Mokoena at the far post. However, the midfielder failed to direct his header on target and saw it go past the post.
SuperSport's wasted opportunities came back to bite them just shy of the hour mark as Maritzburg drew level. Mxolisi Kunene sent a left-footed cross in towards Judas Moseamedi and the forward made no mistake as he tapped in to level matters.
Matsatsantsa coach Kaitano Tembo decided to make a change in the 73rd minute by introducing Evans Rusike, and he was immediately justified as the sub cracked home a half volley to put the hosts back in front.
Unfortunately for the hosts, Maritzburg responded swiftly. Jeremy Brockie was fouled in the box giving Kutumela the chance to take a penalty for the travelers and he held his nerve to draw level at 2-2 with a well-taken spot-kick.
Brockie twice came within inches of scoring the winner for the away side in the last 10 minutes as his first attempt shaved the post before another from a tight angle went just wide.
In the end both sides came away with a point after an end-to-end affair at Lucas Moripe Stadium.
