Sundowns thrash Al Ahli in CCL to progress

Cape Town - Mamelodi Sundowns marched into the group stages of the CAF Champions League as they demolished Libya's Al Ahli Benghazi 4-0 on Saturday in Pretoria.

It was 'Downs who came out the stronger and they went close inside the first 15 minutes. Gaston Sirino showed skill and composure to send in a good cross, though striker Jeremy Brockie missed a gaping net.

Defender Ricardo Nascimento came close in the 30th minute as his header was kept out from a fine piece of goalkeeping.

Nonetheless, the dominance paid dividends in the 35th minute as Sirino found space in the box to tap home from Anthony Laffor's excellent cross.

Brockie, thereafter, made up for his earlier miss as he converted in the 50th minute as the home side began to run riot.

After the break, Downs came close again as Laffor used a well-timed run into the area, before the former SuperSport United man shot over the bar.

Yet, the Brazilians made it 3-0 after Laffor brought down Lebohang Maboe's fine pass to finish in the bottom corner with precision.

It was now becoming a massacre as Sirino weaved through four defenders before seeing his strike shave the top corner on the hour mark.

Inside the last 10 minutes substitute Jose Ali Meza showed strength and composure as he held off two defenders and fired into the bottom corner to complete a stunning display by the Brazilians.

There were no more further alarms as it ended 4-0 to the Pitso Mosimane-coached outfit.
