Mbalula rewards Sundowns with R700 000

Cape Town - Minister of Sports and Recreation Fikile Mbalula has rewarded Mamelodi Sundowns with R700 000 after their CAF Champions League heroics.

The Chloorkop side travelled to Egypt over the past weekend to defend a first-leg lead of 3-0 against Zamalek.

Despite losing the match 1-0 in front of 60 000, predominantly Zamalek, fans, Sundowns clinched their first ever CAF title in the unlikeliest of fashions after being reinstated into the competition.

On their return to South Africa, Mbalula confirmed that Sundowns will be rewarded with a cash prize as a "token of appreciation".

"As a token of appreciation, the Minister of Sport and Recreation SA will give Sundowns R700 000 to share amongst themselves," Mbalula's said on his official Twitter account.

"Sundowns didn't only represent themselves but our nation. R20 000 to a player to show our appreciation is little but a sign of gratitude."

On Tuesday, Sundowns president Patrice Motsepe confirmed that the $1.5 million (R20 million) first prize would be shared among the team.

Meanwhile, the Brazilians will have to readjust their focus to the Telkom Knockout competition as they face Polokwane City on Thursday.

Kick-off is at 18:00.
