Cape Town - Mamelodi Sundowns showed their class as they defeated Chippa United 1-0 in Saturday's Premiership encounter at the Sisa Dukashe Stadium in Mdantsane.
Sundowns largely were on top and took the lead through Gaston Sirino. Downs maintained their dominance largely as the game went on.
In the second period, Andile Mbenyane went close but it was not to be.
Sundowns started well and used their greater quality to try take the lead in the opening stages.
With that said, the home side had an early opening largely against the run of play when Ruzaigh Gamildien flashed wide with a strike.
Downs showed their quality thereafter as Lebogang Maboe and Andile Jali combined to set up Sirino but Daniel Akpeyi was alert to the danger.
The Uruguayan made amends soon when he struck home from inside the penalty area after getting a good pass from Maboe.
On the half an hour mark Jali hit the woodwork from a cross from Maboe. The chances were few and far between though Mark Mayambela nearly surprised goalkeeper Denis Onyango with a shot from distance.
Yet, there could have been late drama as Mbenyane missed a great chance after being set-up by Lerato Manzini.
There were no more major alarms as it ended 1-0 in Mdantsane on the night.
