Sundowns and Pirates success helps Bafana, says Tovey

Cape Town - SAFA Technical Director and Bafana Bafana legend Neil Tovey says success in the CAF Champions League and even the Confederations Cup helps Bafana Bafana to succeed in Africa.

Sundowns have been massively successful in the Champions League in recent seasons, winning the crown in 2016.

Whereas, Pirates gave a good account of themselves in their return to Africa's most prestigious club competition this season by reaching the group stages.

In addition, SuperSport United were losing finalists in the CAF Confederations Cup in 2017 to TP Mazembe.

Meanwhile, Bidvest Wits, Cape Town City and Free State Stars have all taken part with less success in the CCC as well in recent times.

Speaking to Kickoff about Bafana successfully qualifying for the Africa Cup of Nations with a win over Libya, Tovey said: "It obviously plays a role in everything.

"It's very, very important that we do well in our CAF Championship matches. It's all about getting experience on the continent, you can't buy that experience you know.

"Let's wait for the draw and see who we are going to play. It's not about the last time or whatever you know, let's go and just play our game, see what happens.

"That's how it should always be, it shouldn't be anything different. You are playing for your country, so it shouldn't be anything different. It's just a case of a strong mental approach to the game, and that's what you need.

"There's enough time to prepare after the [PSL] season finishes. The planning comes when the draw is done, which is when we will know who we are playing against. Everything will be discussed when the draw is done, all the planning will then be put into place."
