Cape Town - Free State Stars failed to move off the bottom of the Absa Premiership log after losing 1-0 to Polokwane City in a league match at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Wednesday night.
Following Ajax Cape Town’s first win in the league on Tuesday night it moved the Ea Lla Koto to the bottom of the table, and that is where they stayed as they failed to score against Polokwane.
The loss is Stars’ fifth of the league season and they have still not tasted a win as they occupy 16th place with five points from ten games.
The win for Polokwane, on the other hand, sees them hold seventh place in with 14 points from ten games, only two points behind sixth placed Kaizer Chiefs.
Polokwane took the lead in the 21st minute when Rodney Ramagalela turned home a beautiful pass from Puleng Tloalane to make it 1-0.
Stars almost drew level on the half hour mark when a through ball from Danny Venter found Katlego Mashego in space just inside the box, but he blazed over the target.
Ramagalela nearly doubled the home side’s lead in the 37th minute when he met a pass from Edgar Manaka, but he dragged his shot wide.
The half ended 1-0 in favour of Polokwane.
Stars came out firing in the second half and nearly scored eight minutes after the restart, but Polokwane goalkeeper George Chigova was at his best to deny Venter from the edge of the box.
On the hour mark Stars goalkeeper Thela Ngobeni had to be at his best to turn an effort from Tlolane around the post.
Free State pushed hard for an equaliser in the final twenty minutes, but they struggled to break down a well-organised Polokwane defence.
In the end Polokwane held on for a hard fought 1-0 win, which was their third victory in the league this season.
